Heritage & Operations

The 2007 Legacy

Onion routing addresses have evolved from the original 2007-era 16-character v2 format to today's 56-character v3 cryptographic addresses, which are self-authenticating and resistant to collision attacks. TORDIR continues the spirit of the earliest directory projects from that era while deliberately rejecting the unmoderated, illicit aggregation that came to define much of the early dark web.

Infrastructure & Threat Model

A clearnet mirror exists because discovery is the hardest part of reaching the Tor network safely: new users need a trustworthy, indexable onboarding ramp before they ever open Tor Browser. TORDIR's clearnet frontend is a static site compilation with zero dynamic database execution and zero client-side analytics — there is nothing on this page that can phone home.

Operator Governance & Accountability

TORDIR is maintained pseudonymously by a small group of independent privacy researchers. Accountability is maintained through signed canary files, a public Git repository documenting every directory change, and immutable historical records of additions, removals, and tier changes.

Transparency Reports

Quarterly transparency reports summarize: number of listings added/removed, number of security reports triaged, average time-to-remediation, and any legal process received. Reports are signed with the directory's PGP key and published alongside the signed bundle downloads referenced in the Methodology page.
